Originally written in , Bell switches between first-person and third-person narration by sometimes referring to himself as 'I' or 'The Author' and always referring to 'Readers,' rather than 'You. It all takes place within a forty year spanse prior to him authoring the book, but you'd think from its rendering in absolute recall that it'd all happened about a week before. Nov 25, Scott A.
Nicholson rated it really liked it. A nice collection of Southern California's history told from the perspective of an author who lived through it. Horace Bell is known to have exagerated frequently, but even his tallest tales generally have some foundation with reality. Outlaws, gamblers, and gringos make for an intriguing read through gunfights and hangings.

Although Horace Bell attempts to skirt around the more violent episodes, the prolific crime and muder throughout the area make it an impossible task. Also notable in the tex A nice collection of Southern California's history told from the perspective of an author who lived through it. Reminiscences of a Ranger: Early Times in Southern California
Horatio Bell came to California in as a gold seeker, failed to strike it rich, and headed to Los Angeles in in search of better prospects. His journalistic skills permeate the volume allowing him to capture the flavor of Los Angeles during the violent and raucous early s when his rangers struggled to bring peace to a town better known as "Los Diablos.
His eloquent accounts of fandangos, fiestas, a stagecoach race, and a cattle stampede demonstrate another side of life in Los Angeles. References: Graf Howes B Streeter Auction Info Auction Dates.
